Kerala wins UNIATF award prevention and control of NCD 2020






Kerala has won the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases Awards 2020 for its “outstanding contribution” towards the non-communicable diseases-related sustainable development goals. Kerala has been awarded for the tireless service of the state in the health sector. This is the first time for Kerala to be recognised by this annual UN Award and along with Kerala 6 other health ministries across the globe have won the 2020 UNIATF Award.

About UNIATF Award 2020:

The 2020 award recognises the contributions and achievements of the year 2019 on the multisectoral actions in the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, Mental Health and other SDGs related to non-communicable diseases. The award also recognised the state of the art lung disease control program, cancer treatment program and paralysis control programme of the state.

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons






The United Nations observes 26 September every year as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority. It provides an opportunity to educate the public and their leaders about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them.

History of International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons:

The General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013, in its resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament held on 26 September 2013, in New York.

Uttar Pradesh Govt launches unified portal ‘U-Rise’






The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath has launched a unified portal called ‘U-Rise’. Uttar Pradesh is the first state to launch such a unified portal along with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020.

About ‘U-Rise’:

  • The U-Rise portal would empower the students by providing them with practical and technical knowledge ranging from online exams, digital content, digital assessment, digital examination papers, webinars, internship, e-library, recorded video content to employment.
  • The U-Rise portal will guide around 20 lakh students, in learning, career counselling, and getting employment in the state.
  • The e-content, e-library, and online courses available on this portal will be accessible by students even in the most interior areas of the state.

• The 4th edition of Maritime bilateral exercise between India and Japan “JIMEX 20” has been scheduled to be held from 26 to 28 September 2020. The exercise is conducted biennially between the Indian Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). JIMEX 20 will be conducted in North Arabian Sea.

• Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on 25 September after a long battle with the coronavirus. He died at the age of 74. He was an exceptional artist whose career spanned more than five decades. The veteran singer has sung over 40,000 songs in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam and in 16 Languages.

• Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has appointed Shri Sunil Sethi, a leading personality in the Indian fashion industry, as its advisor. Sethi will advise the Commission on latest design interventions in the readymade garments segment and promotion of Khadi in India and abroad. He appointment is be for a tenure of one year.

• Veteran atomic scientist and former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr Sekhar Basu succumbed to COVID-19. He was 68. A mechanical engineer, Dr Basu is revered for his contributions to the country’s atomic energy programme. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2014. He had also pioneered the highly complex reactor for India’s first nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant.

• Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh is set to become India’s first woman fighter pilot to fly the Rafale aircraft that was formally inducted into the Indian Air Force on September 10. Shivangi Singh, who hails from Varanasi, is currently being trained to fly IAF’s newest fighter based in Ambala. She is undergoing conversion training to fly the Rafale jet and will soon join the Ambala-based No. 17 squadron, also known as “Golden Arrows.” The officer, who is one of IAF’s 10 women fighter pilots, joined the air force in 2017. After joining IAF, she has been flying the MiG-21 Bison aircraft.

• The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified the Standards for Safety Evaluation of vehicles being propelled by Hydrogen Fuel Cells. The Standards were notified through an amendment to Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989. This would facilitate the promotion of Hydrogen Fuel Cell based vehicles in the country which are energy efficient and environment friendly.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Age Appropriate Fitness Protocols on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Fit India Movement. The Youth Ministry and Health Ministry together released Fitness protocols. Age Appropriate Fitness Protocols have been envisaged for three age groups: 5 – 18, 18 – 65 and above 65.

• Historian-author Rana Safvi has been conferred Yamin Hazarika award, an award instituted in memory of Yamin Hazarika, the first woman from the Northeast to join the central police service. Rana Safvi, who has published several books on culture, history, and monuments of India, was chosen for her “contribution to the syncretic culture of India”. The award is given every year by a collective of women professionals since 2015.

• Kerala Tourism’s internationally-acclaimed ‘Human by Nature’ campaign has bagged one of the three PATA Grand Awards 2020. The awards were announced live during a virtual presentation ceremony in Beijing, China. The award recognized the campaign’s Marketing, giving a huge stimulus to the state’s tourism industry, which has been severely impacted by COVID-19 pandemic.

• Winners of the prestigious Nobel prizes this year will receive an extra 1 million crowns ($110,000), the head of the foundation which oversees the awards said. Prize money will increase to 10 million crowns this year. Dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel left around 31 million crowns – about 1.8 billion crowns in today’s money according to the Foundation – to fund the prizes, which have been awarded since 1901.

• Queen Elizabeth II, who is the head of state in the UK and 15 other Commonwealth realms, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, will be dropped as monarch by Barbados next year. The Caribbean nation aims to complete the process of becoming a republic before its 55th anniversary of independence from Britain, in November 2021. With this, it will become the first country in almost three decades to sever ties with the British royal family and become a republic; Mauritius being the last to do so in 1992.

EESL appoints Rajat Sud as its new Managing Director






A Joint Venture(JV) of Public Sector Undertakings, under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has appointed Rajat Sud as its new Managing Director from immediate effect. He takes charge from S Gopal, director (commercial), who was given the additional charge as interim MD. 51st edition of IFFI postponed to January 2021






The 51st Edition of the International Film Festival of India, IFFI will be held from 16th to 24th January, next year in Goa. Earlier it was scheduled to be held from 20th November to 28th November, this year. It has also been jointly decided to hold the festival on new dates as per the International Film Festival guidelines and protocols.

The festival will be conducted in a Virtual and Physical format. All COVID related protocols will be strictly enforced as per the festivals convened recently in the International Film Festival circuit.
