No international chief as chief visitor on Republic Day this 12 months



According to External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava, as a result of world COVID-19 state of affairs, it has been determined that this 12 months there won’t be a international Head of State or Head of Government because the Chief Guest for the Republic Day occasion. President Ramnath Kovind will take the salute on the parade this time. This would be the first time in over 5 a long time that India won’t have a chief visitor on the Republic Day parade.

This comes days after United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled his go to to India. Boris Jonhson was scheduled to be the chief visitor at India’s Republic Day parade on January 26.

History of Republic Day occasion:

  • In 2020, Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro was the chief visitor.
  • The final time such a state of affairs arose was in 1966 when no Chief Guest was current on the occasion which was held days after the demise of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent and the dying of nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha in an air crash.
  • Foreign leaders have graced the Republic Day parades yearly barring 1952, 1953 and 1966.
  • Indonesian President Sukarno was the primary chief visitor to grace Republic Day in 1950.
